IDIOT ETYMOLOGY / ETIMOLOGÍA IDOTA

"It's offensive" we hear certain wounded susceptibilities roar after the name chosen for this project, which takes its name from the central figure in the homonymous novel by Fedor Dostoevsky.
Dostoevsky, as is widely known, lowered heaven to earth by inverting all ideals, making them human. There he immersed himself, in those persecuted, guilty, tormented and humiliated souls.

In the Greek world, "idios" meant "private," outside of political power. However, with Plutarch the word "idios" designated an extraordinary or unusual man. For his part, Heraclitus used the expression "idios cosmos" to refer to the private world that a particular individual builds for himself and that differs from the "koinos cosmos" or shared understanding of the world that other individuals have.
The Latin world inherited Greek semantism and defined as an "idiot" anyone who does not participate in the government. From here gradually the term came to designate the uneducated individual, and also, on a sliding slope, the ignorant and even the weak intellectual.

Later the French thinker Diderot, in the article «Idiot» (1782) of the great Encyclopaedia edited by him, took up the meaning of Plutarch and related it to the Horacian ideal of the «beatus ille»: the idiot is the «private man, who he has shut himself up in a retired life, far from political affairs, that is to say, the one whom today we would call wise ». *

For its part, the Royal Spanish Academy defines the word Idiot as:
1. adj. Silly or short of understanding. U. t. C. s. U. t. C. insult.
2. adj. Cocky with no basis for it. U. t. C. s.
3. adj. Own or characteristic of the idiot person.
4. adj. Medicine. That suffers from idiocy. U. t. C. s.
5. adj. his. That lacks any instruction. **

But what is an idiot in Dostoevsky? Whoever needs to answer this question will immerse myself in the turbulent waters of his literature. "In a certain case it is best not to say anything."

Etimología del Idiota

―Es ofensivo― escuché bramar a ciertas susceptibilidades heridas, en pos de la denominación escogida para este proyecto que toma su nombre de la figura central de la novela homónima de Fedor Dostoievski.

Dostoievski, como es ampliamente sabido, bajó el cielo a la tierra invirtiendo todos los ideales, volviendolos humanos. Allí se sumergió, en esas almas perseguidas, culpables, atormentadas y humilladas.

En el mundo griego, «idios» significaba «privado», fuera del poder político. No obstante, con Plutarco el vocablo «idios» designaba a un hombre extraordinario o fuera de lo común.  Por su parte, Heráclito empleó la expresión «idios cosmos» para referirse al mundo privado que un individuo particular se construye y que difiere del «koinos cosmos» o comprensión compartida del mundo que tienen los demás individuos.

El mundo latino heredó el semantismo griego y definió como «idiota» a quien no participa del gobierno. De aquí paulatinamente el término pasó a designar al individuo sin instrucción, y también, en pendiente deslizante, al ignorante e incluso al débil intelectual.

Más tarde el pensador francés Diderot en el artículo «Idiota» (1782) de la magna Enciclopedia por él dirigida, retomó el sentido de Plutarco y lo relacionó con el ideal horaciano del «beatus ille»: el idiota es el «hombre particular, que se ha encerrado en una vida retirada, lejos de los asuntos políticos, es decir, aquel a quien hoy llamaríamos sabio».*

Por su parte la Real Academia española define la palabra Idiota como:

1. adj. Tonto o corto de entendimiento. U. t. c. s. U. t. c. insulto.

2. adj. Engreído sin fundamento para ello. U. t. c. s.

3. adj. Propio o característico de la persona idiota.

4. adj. Med. Que padece de idiocia. U. t. c. s.

5. adj. desus. Que carece de toda instrucción.**

¿Pero qué es idiota en Dostoievski? Quien necesite dar respuesta a esta interrogante sumerjasé en las aguas turbulentas de su literatura, los demás sigan opinando, pero recuerden que, (en palabras del mismisimo idiota), “En ciertos caso lo mejor es no decir nada”.
